  Flood WATCH update 3/30

A flood watch continues for 10 counties in western Washington through Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service/Seattle. Updated 4:48 p.m., March 30, the watch statement said:

HEAVY RAIN WILL CONTINUE TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING. FLOODING IS POSSIBLE ON MANY RIVERS IN WESTERN WASHINGTON. FLOOD WARNINGS ARE ALREADY UP FOR SEVERAL RIVERS...BUT MORE WARNINGS COULD BE ISSUED OVERNIGHT.

...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON...

THE FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR PORTIONS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON...INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES: CLALLAM, JEFFERSON, SKAGIT, WHATCOM, KING, LEWIS, MASON, PIERCE, SNOHOMISH and THURSTON.

* HEAVY RAIN FROM A WARM FRONTAL SYSTEM DROVE SEVERAL RIVERS ABOVE FLOOD STAGE TODAY. MORE HEAVY RAIN IN THE MOUNTAINS IS EXPECTED TONIGHT...AND OTHER RIVERS REMAIN AT RISK OF FLOODING.

* THE RIVERS UNDER THE GREATEST THREAT OF FLOODING ARE THE ONES THAT FLOW OUT OF THE CENTRAL CASCADES. WARNINGS ARE ALREADY IN EFFECT FOR THE SNOQUALMIE...SKYKOMISH...STILLAGUAMISH...AND TOLT. THE SNOHOMISH RIVER IS ALSO LIKELY TO FLOOD BUT THE SEVERITY OF FLOODING IS UNCERTAIN AND IN ANY CASE FLOODING WILL NOT BEGIN ON THE SNOHOMISH RIVER UNTIL SOME TIME THURSDAY. THERE IS A CHANCE OF MAJOR FLOODING ON THE SNOHOMISH RIVER.

* THE REACH OF THE GREEN RIVER BETWEEN THE HOWARD HANSON DAM AND THE CITY OF AUBURN COULD HAVE MINOR FLOODING TONIGHT AND THURSDAY.

* THE SKOKOMISH RIVER IN MASON COUNTY COULD ALSO FLOOD...POSSIBLY AS EARLY AS LATE TONIGHT. THERE IS ALSO A CHANCE OF MINOR FLOODING ON THE NOOKSACK AND SKAGIT RIVERS.

* RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE EVENT ARE PREDICTED TO BE 4 TO 7 INCHES IN THE CENTRAL CASCADES AND 2 TO 5 INCHES ON THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA. TWO TO FOUR INCHES ARE PREDICTED TO FALL OVER THE NORTH CASCADES AND THE SOUTHERN CASCADES SOUTH OF MOUNT RAINIER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

A FLOOD WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR FLOODING BUT FLOODING IS NOT IMMINENT OR OCCURRING. MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND BE READY TO ACT QUICKLY IF FLOODING IS OBSERVED OR A WARNING IS ISSUED.
