  Flood WATCH posted

Freezing levels are rising to 6,000 feet and heavy rains are expected to fall tonight through tomorrow morning - according to a flood watch statement posted by the National Weather Service in Seattle this morning. The flood watch is in effect through Thursday afternoon.

The statement reads:

HEAVY RAIN IN THE MOUNTAINS TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING IS
EXPECTED TO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT RISES ON ALL RIVERS DRAINING OFF
THE CASCADES AND WESTERN OLYMPICS AND FLOODING CONDITIONS ON MANY
OF THOSE RIVERS.

...FLOOD WATCH NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON...

THE FLOOD WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR:

* PORTIONS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON...INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING
  COUNTIES... GRAYS HARBOR...CLALLAM...JEFFERSON...SKAGIT...
  WHATCOM...KING...LEWIS...MASON...PIERCE...SNOHOMISH...
  THURSTON.

* THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON

* HEAVY RAIN REMAINS IN THE FORECAST FOR THE MOUNTAINS TODAY
THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE SNOW LEVEL WILL RISE TO 5000 TO
6000 FEET OVER THE NORTH CASCADES AND 6000 TO 7000 FEET FOR THE
CENTRAL CASCADES DURING THIS PERIOD. IF HEAVY RAIN OCCURS AS
EXPECTED...FLOODING IS POSSIBLE ON MOST OF THE RIVERS FLOWING
OUT OF THE CASCADES AND WESTERN OLYMPICS. A FLOOD WATCH REMAINS
IN EFFECT FOR ALL MAIN STEM RIVERS IN WESTERN WASHINGTON.

* SOME UNCERTAINTY STILL EXISTS. HOWEVER RECENT WEATHER MODELS
CONTINUE TO FORECAST THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IN EASTERN KING AND
SNOHOMISH COUNTIES. IN THIS AREA OF THE CASCADE MOUNTAINS 4 TO 7
INCHES OF RAIN IS FORECAST...WITH SOME HIGHER BULLS EYES. RIVERS
FLOWING OUT OF THIS REGION HAVE A HIGH RISK OF FLOODING AND
SEVERAL OF THESE RIVERS ALREADY HAVE FLOOD WARNINGS IN EFFECT AT
THIS TIME. OTHER RIVERS WITH AT LEAST PART OF THEIR DRAINAGE IN
KING AND SNOHOMISH COUNTIES INCLUDE THE SKAGIT AND CEDAR
RIVERS...AND THESE ALSO HAVE A HIGH RISK OF FLOODING.

FLOOD WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR PARTS OF THE WATCH AREA. THE
FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT FLOODING IS POSSIBLE BUT NOT OCCURRING IN
OTHER AREAS. THIS APPLIES TO NEW AREAS OR LOCATIONS NOT ALREADY
COVERED BY A FLOOD WARNING. MONITOR THE WEATHER AND BE READY TO
ACT QUICKLY IF FLOODING IS OBSERVED OR MORE WARNINGS ARE ISSUED.
