Winter weather can mean poor driving conditions, including ice and snow on our roadways.  The City of Centralia makes every effort to keep its roads passable from the effects of these conditions with a fleet of sanding and snow removal equipment.
The Cityís Street Department has in its fleet 3 sanders and snow plows mounted on dump trucks, a motor grader which is converted to plow snow, and in extreme conditions the Department has the ability to spread liquid de-icier using its tanker truck.
Centralia, with over 82 miles of roads, has devised a priority plan for the removal of ice and snow from its streets.  Priority is given to the viaducts, bridges, roadways leading to the hospital, major hillside roads, and signaled intersections.  As conditions warrant, sanding and snow plowing in other parts of the City will be conducted as needed depending upon the availability of manpower and equipment.  Some streets may be restricted or closed to traffic depending on conditions.
What can you do to help?  If winter weather conditions exist with ice and snow on the roadways donít drive if you donít have to.  If you have to go out and drive, slow down!  Give the snow plows and sanders plenty of room to operate.  Sanders spread sanding gravel and if you travel too close your car will get pelted with rock.  Be aware that snow plows make wide turns and be sure the operators can see you if you pass or travel next to the machinery.
With patience, and the knowledge that the Cityís Street Department is making every effort to keep the roads passable, the citizens of Centralia will be able to travel throughout the City safely.
