WSDOT I-5 Mellen to Blakeslee Project Update

I-5, Mellen Street to Blakeslee Junction project

Construction update: March 11, 2013

Changes to I-5 ramp closures at Mellen Street
Crews need a bit more time to finish the wall along southbound I-5 before they can remove the shoring, so we are pushing out the Mellen Street ramp closures that were originally scheduled to begin tonight. Here’s the updated schedule:

  • March 12 and 13: Southbound I-5 off-ramp to Mellen Street closed, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
  • March 14, 18 and 19: Northbound I-5 on-ramp from Mellen Street closed, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.

Thanks for your patience and flexibility.

Construction update:  Feb. 13, 2013

Pour it on: Concrete hits the deck on CD bridge
Crews are pouring concrete for the northbound collector distributor bridge on Thursday, Feb. 14. The bridge will eventually carry the CD lane over the Skookumchuck River.

Dozens of concrete trucks will be moving on and off the interstate during this work, so the right lane of northbound I-5 will be closed from 7 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday.

Crews are planning to pour the southbound CD lane bridge deck in late February, followed by the new I-5 bridge over Reynolds Avenue in March.

Step by step
This is the third major step in bridge building. Once the deck is poured and hardened, the bridge structure is essentially complete. Crews will still have a lot of work to do, but at that point it will look convincingly like a bridge.

As I've said before, it’s really important that we complete these bridges this spring. We need them to be operational for the next stage of construction, because we’ll be using them to shift traffic while crews are working on certain elements of the project. So tomorrow’s deck pour is a big milestone in more ways than one, and it’s a good marker for progress on this important safety and mobility project.
