Update: I-5 bridge demolition, Reynolds Ave. closures

I-5, Mellen Street to Blakeslee Junction (MTB) project

Contrusction update from Washington State Department of Transportation

I-5 bridge demo progressing on schedule

We’re now in the second week of I-5 bridge demolition, and crews are making great progress! They’ve brought down more than half of the structure that once carried southbound I-5 over Reynolds Ave., and they’re continuing to crunch away at it each day.

We put together a cool time-lapse video that shows the work from May 9-13. If you have a minute and nine seconds to watch five days of demolition, check it out!

Of speed limits and road closures

Early this morning, crews completed the northbound I-5 traffic shift, and now both directions of traffic are traveling on the bridge our contractor built over Reynolds last year. We’ve also reduced the speed limit for northbound I-5, so both directions of interstate are now 50 mph from the Skookumchuck River bridges to just north of Reynolds Ave.

We’re at an exciting transition point in the project – traffic is moved over and the old bridges are coming down to make room for the new northbound I-5 bridge over Reynolds. Demolition will take a few more weeks, and at this point we’re continuing with the same closure schedule we had last week:

Reynolds Ave. Closures
  • 6 p.m. Monday, May 19, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 20
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 21
  • 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, to 5 a.m. Thursday, May 22
  • 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22, to 5 a.m. Friday, May 23

Impacts during Memorial Day weekend

There won’t be any impacts to I-5 during Memorial Day weekend, but we're not sure yet if we’ll have any closures of Reynolds. As mentioned before, we try to avoid impacts on holidays, but we also want to get this work done as quickly as possible.
