City Light Outage - Sunday, October 5, 2014 - 8 - 11 AM
Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) and Centralia City Light (CCL) crews were on site at the City Light Headquarters Sunday morning, October 5th to work together to make alterations to the lines supplying the new May Street Substation, located adjacent to the Headquarters. As part of this planned evolution, the electrical system had been realigned to minimize the effect of any outage that might occur during the work that was planned.
The system alignment required that the nearby B-Street Substation be carried solely by the Yelm Hydro Project generators. While the B-Street Substation was being carried by the Yelm generators, a problem developed with one of the generators. The generator had to be shut down just after 8 AM and this caused the outage of the B-Street Substation. The electrical circuits being carried by the B-Street Substation that were lost during this outage covered most of the City east of I-5 and on south out to Salzer Valley.
The BPA crews worked as rapidly as possible to complete their work and were able to do so around 10:45 AM. The CCL crews then restored the power to all the City circuits just after 11 AM, limiting the outage length to three hours. The problem with the Yelm generator is being evaluated.
