May Street Substation

Centralia City Light is constructing a new substation to eventually replace the aging B Street substation at 1100 North Tower Avenue in Centralia. Called the May Street Substation, it will be located between May Street and the railroad tracks that serve the Port of Centralia, about one block from the existing substation. At the same time, City Light is revising what sections of the City are fed from which substation in order to provide more reliable service with a better balance of loads among the City’s existing substations. May Street will be the City’s sixth substation. Two others – Cooks Hill and North Port – have been built in the last four years, and the Fords Prairie and Zimmerman stations were both upgraded substantially within the past ten years. The attached layout map shows the new substation and where it is located with respect to the B Street Substation.

The B Street Station has been the central hub for Centralia power delivery for many years. It is the point where the City’s Yelm Hydroelectric Project delivers power to the City via a 69,000-Volt transmission line, and one of the primary delivery points where the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) delivers power to the City. Many of the key components of the station are now reaching end of life and it is time to plan for the future with a new substation.

The construction schedule currently has the May Street substation bus energized on July 1 of this year (2012). Existing B Street feeders (the lines that extend the power to local neighborhoods) will be transferred one at a time beginning in July. Some B Street feeders will continue to be fed from B Street for a period of several years to enable a smooth transition to the new station. The City is making every effort to avoid any major outages during the transition period, but there may be an extended outage on July 1 if necessary to effect a safe rerouting of BPA transmission lines to the new station.

The pictures show construction progress on the May Street Substation.

For additional information, please call City Light administrative offices at 1100 N. Tower, 330-7512, or drop by for more information and a look at the new substation.
