  COVID-19 LOCAL UPDATES

CITY OF CENTRALIA - COVID-19 LOCAL UPDATES

Until further notice, all city offices and buildings are closed to public access. Exceptions will be considered on an individual basis. Please see the section regarding individual city departments near the bottom of this page for further details.

The COVID-19 emergency has required numerous modifications to City of Centralia operations. The city would like to assure our citizens that it is fully committed to providing essential services such as utilities and police throughout this crisis. In order to ensure adequate staffing to support these services, the city needs to limit exposure of city staff to COVID-19 to the greatest degree possible.

Message from Mayor Sue Luond

On behalf of the Centralia City Council members and staff, I want to assure our citizens that we are prepared and committed to providing your essential city services. As this unprecedented event unfolds, we will continue to update our website with the latest information and updates. I want to thank everyone in the community for their work and patience as we work through this.

Combined Monthly Utility Bill – Small Commercial COVID-19 Payment Arrangement Application

The COVID-19 Emergency and the resulting proclamations by Governor Inslee have resulted in a reduction of the spread of the coronavirus, but have also led to financial hardship for many small businesses.  On March 24, 2020 the Centralia City Council gave their support, in line with the governor’s strong recommendation, to the City of Centralia Utilities that there would be no disconnects of small commercial accounts during the COVID-19 Emergency.  In addition, there would be no late fees or penalties assessed to the monthly utility bills of these accounts.

Small commercial accounts were given permission to defer 50% of their monthly utility bill.  In order for this deferral to be implemented and approved, a ‘Small Commercial COVID-19 Payment Arrangement Application’ form must be filled out and returned to the Customer Service Center (CSC) located at 500 N. Pearl, Centralia, WA.  The form may be dropped off at the CSC drop box, scanned and e-mailed to csc@cityofcentralia.com or mailed via the US Post Office. If there are questions associated with this policy and/or the form please contact the City of Centralia Customer Service Center at (360) 330-7657.

Other forms are available online for various City Departments.

Centralia Department Updates

Police Department
The Centralia Police Department will be closed for walk-in business services until further notice. If you have a business related question, please call (360) 330-7680 during regular business hours. If you need to speak to an officer, please call central dispatch at (360) 740-1105 or dial 9-1-1 if it’s an emergency.

If you would like to report a non-emergency crime occurring within the city limits of Centralia, please click on attached link. www.cityofcentralia.com/Page.asp?NavID=862

Thank you and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Parks and Recreation
The City playgrounds are closed for children at this time to reduce the spread of Covid-19.  To encourage residents to meet Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 20-25, we will be reducing access and parking within Borst and Riverside parks.  The gate by Borst Park Kitchen #2 will be closed but park patrons can park by Futurus High School/Parks Maintenance building, by Wheeler field/Borst Softball Fields, or by the soccer fields to access the trail system.  This is being done to limit the need for city staff who daily lock and unlock gates, dump trash cans, and clean restrooms.  We want people to enjoy the City Parks and Trails and as the Governor stated: “Engaging in outdoor exercise activities, such as walking, hiking, running or biking, but only if appropriate social distancing practices are used”.

The City has placed porta-potties and hand-washing stations at Borst, Riverside, and Washington parks, as well as the Centralia Train Depot and they, are cleaned daily.

All park rental facilities (kitchens, picnic shelters, and the Centralia Train Depot multi-purpose rooms) and recreation activities are closed or canceled until further notice.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Emil Pierson, Community Development Director at epierson@cityofcentralia.com or (360) 880-3013 (call/text).

Planning and Building Departments
The City of Centralia is now accepting online permit application submittals!

All building-related permit applications, along with construction plans and associated documentation, may be submitted online.  Since this is a new process for all of us we thank you for your patience.  To access the online permit process please go to the City’s website at www.cityofcentralia.com and then go to the Community Development Department front page and you will see a link to the online permitting process.

In the event the City offices close, due to the Covid-19, we have no plans to curtail building inspections or processing planning permits.  Please contact the following according to your building/planning needs:

Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.

City Light & Public Works
During the closing of the City Light/Public Works buildings to the public, City Light and Public Works personnel are available to answer questions or address customer needs.  Please contact the office at (360) 330-7512 and the staff will put you in contact with the member of City Light or Public Works that you need to contact.

The City of Centralia’s McKenna and Nisqually Parks in Yelm will be closed under the Governor’s Stay at Home Order.  The parks will reopen once the Stay at Home order is lifted.

Wipes
The City of Centralia Wastewater Department would like to remind everyone to only flush the "Three P's" Pee, Poop and toilet Paper.

Please do not flush Disinfecting Wipes, Paper Towels or Flushable Wipes...Throw them away instead!  Flushing disinfecting wipes, flushable wipes, paper towels and similar products will clog sewer mainlines and cause backups and overflows at our treatment plant, disrupting service and creating unnecessary public health risk.  Even though the package says "flushable", flushable wipes clog pipes, plug pumps and interfere with sewage collections.  Wipes and paper towels do not break down like toilet paper.  Throw these in the garbage instead!

Summerfest Cancelled

Due to requirements outlined in the Governor’s executive order regarding the COVID-19 emergency, the City of Centralia is cancelling activities associated with the 4th of July Summerfest celebration. Most of the usual events, including the breakfast, parade and destruction derby, would not be compliant with the distancing measures and gathering restrictions anticipated to be in place at that time. A public fireworks show may still be sponsored. Details on this will be announced at a future date. The City extends its sincere gratitude to all of the volunteers and sponsors that have made Summerfest such a lasting success and look forward to 2021.
