  Utility Related Scam Phone Calls

Since the Governor’s Proclamation regarding late fees and disconnects ended, the City of Centralia has seen an increase in scam phone calls where the caller claims to be from our Utilities Customer Service Center and threatens to disconnect power if payment is not made immediately.  

Things to watch for:
  • The caller ID on your phone might show they are calling from the City of Centralia.
  • The caller might have a pre-recorded message that sounds like they are calling from the City of Centralia. 
  • The caller might say your utilities will be disconnected immediately if you do not pay.
  • The caller might ask that you wire money to a certain person or buy a pre-paid credit card to make a     
     payment; the City of Centralia would never ask you to do this.
  • Scam callers can sound very believable by quoting fictitious past due balances and utility policies.

We encourage our utility customers to do the following:
  • Be proactive! If you are behind on your utility bill, call us and discuss your options before the scammers 
     contact you.
  • If you receive a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be from the City of Centralia, hang up
     and call our office at (360) 330-7657.
  • If someone suspicious comes to your door regarding your utilities, call our office.
  • You may also report suspicious phone calls to the Centralia Police Department’s non-emergency
     phone number at (360) 740-1105.

As a reminder, the City of Centralia’s current policy regarding past due utility balances is to send a yellow disconnect notice out if payment has not been made by the regular billing due date (the 25th of each month).  We will also send out a notification phone call to our past due customers on the closest date of business before the past due date (the 10th of each month). On occasion, but this is not the norm, we may call a customer who is scheduled for disconnect if it is an unusual occurrence for that customer.
