Transportation Benefit District

Sales & Use Tax Levy Information

The City of Centralia, acting as the Centralia Transportation Benefit District, adopted Resolution No. 2826 concerning a sales and use tax for transportation projects. This proposition would renew the current sales and use tax of two-tenths of one percent (0.2%) for an additional term of ten years, beginning January 1, 2026 and ending December 31, 2035, to fund transportation improvements, traffic engineering and control, and the general operation, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure.  Please call Andy Oien, Public Works Director at phone: 360-330-7512 for additional information.

Program Summary & Projects List

TBD Renewal Facts

In addition to the large-scale construction projects, Transportation Benefit District funds are used to maintain city streets, fix sidewalks, make critical repairs, chip-seal existing roads, and patch potholes.

  • Tax Renewal, Not an Increase: This is a renewal of the 0.2% sales and use tax that voters first approved in 2015. The tax rate will not go up; it will remain at 0.2%.
  • Duration: The renewal will extend the tax for another 10-year period.
  • How it Works: As a sales and use tax, it applies to anyone shopping within Centralia City Limits. A person buying a $5 coffee would continue to pay only 1 cent to this tax.
  • Revenue Generated: Over the last 10 years, the TBD has generated a total of $7,921,748. In 2019 alone, it brought in $1,181,403 for street projects.

Why Renew TBD?

The City needs this revenue because sufficient funds are not available in the general budget to cover roadwork.

  • Funding: It pays for critical repairs such as potholes and chip-seal, and helps to fund some major projects like the Westside Connector.
  • Grant Leverage: TBD funds are used to leverage grant money. With $1,306,000 in TBD funds, the City has obtained $6,861,000 in grant funding.
