Prepare Before An Earthquake
1. Practice Drop, Cover, Hold. Think about your best options for work and home.
3. Make an Emergency Plan: write down the phone number for an out of state contact, choose a meeting place for your family, decide where to store your emergency kit and make a plan on how often to check, rotate and add supplies.
4. Protect your home. Secure bookcases and televisions to the walls. Store heavy items on low shelves. Consider earthquake insurance.
Stay Safe During
1. If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake.
2. If you are outdoors, stay outdoors and away from buildings if possible.
3. If you are inside, do not run outside. Drop, Cover and Hold on. Avoid doorways.
4. If you are in bed, turn facedown and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
5. Do not call 911 to report an earthquake or to ask if it was an earthquake. Keep 911 open for emergencies.
Stay Safe After
1. Expect aftershocks. Drop, Cover and Hold during an aftershock.
2. If you are in a building that gets damaged, go outside once the shaking has stopped. Do not enter damaged buildings.
3. If you are injured and need medical attention, call 911.
4. Use text to communicate with loved ones, if possible. Text may be more reliable than phone calls after a disaster.
5. Be careful when cleaning up and wear protective clothing.
